After retiring, I was involved in a number of baseball related events. In the summer of 1976, Von and I were invited to an “old-timer’s event” in St. Louis where the Cardinals were especially honoring the 1928 team. Only nine players from that team were still alive. We had a game before the regular game, and I pitched for both sides as I could throw perfect strikes allowing them to hit the ball. I just wanted to see them hit, run and field at their age, and so did the fans. The banquet was a hoot as these old-timers really had a sense of humor.
In the eighties, I was invited to a Cub’s reunion in Chicago where I took Alice, Susie and Joey. We stayed at a very fancy Hotel and drove to South Chicago to a museum and to north to Evanston and saw an outdoor production play (Annie Get Your Gun).
Over the years I have attended a number of card shows where I would sign autographs. Most of these were in St. Louis, but a few were in the New York area and one in Philadelphia.
I was inducted into some local “Sports Hall of Fame’s” like the Harmon County Sports Hall of Fame which included my 2nd cousin, Darrell Royal, and into the Jackson County Sports Hall of Fame, where I played American Legion. These were are great honor since Southwest Oklahoma produced a lot of great athletes.
Over the years I have gotten a lot of fan mail for autographs. The last photos of this site are of six special post-retirement events:
-
Alice and I taking a cruise to the Bahamas with Hall of Fame players
The 1993 Centennial Celebration of Cardinal baseball
Induction into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 where I was joined by children and grand-children
Trip to St. Louis in 2008 with Dale, Blake, Katelyn and A.J.
Trip to San Francisco with Susie for the 50th Anniversary of Giants in San Francisco
Trip to New York for “Old Timer’s” events in 2009 joined by family and friends.

Many players of the past were brought to St. Louis and a huge ceremony took place in Busch Stadium on the river front where players were separated according to decade, and introduced to the audience. There was an old timer’s game at the park the next day. All together there were three days of activities in St. Louis. The family rode the trolley cars all over the place free of charge.

It was great to have all my children and grandchildren at the event.

These are photos of the Giants’ 50th Anniversary of coming to San Francisco. Throughout the year of 2008, various players were invited to participate. I flew to San Francisco along with my daughter, Susie, in July of 2008. We were met at the San Francisco International Airport and taken by a special driver straight to a very nice hotel where the old timers were staying. All of the meals were provided. This included about 50 players, mostly catchers and pitchers.

On next page is a photo of Bob Shaw, Alvin Dark and myself. Usually every morning I would eat breakfast at the hotel with Alvin Dark, Billy O’Dell and Bob Bolin. We talked about things past and present.
Also, at the park, all of the players were individually introduced, with each player walking from a door in centerfield toward the infield. As each player was walking, he would be introduced to the fans and his name would show up on the large electronic scoreboard, as you see in this photo. After all of the players were introduced, having lined up along the foul lines, the National Anthem was played and we were taken to a special section beyond the foul pole in left field.

From the beautiful little ballpark on Staten Island one has a good view of Hudson Bay, New York City and also the Statute of Liberty. The game on the island occurred on Saturday, July 18, 2009. The evening before the players and wives were treated to a meal, just down the street from the Sheraton New York Hotel, where we were staying, at Ruth’s & Chris Steak House. After the game on Saturday, the old-timers along with their wives and friends were taken on a 5 hour yacht trip up and down the river. We could relax, visit, eat, and enjoy the view. The next few pictures are of this trip.
