Chapter Six
A Royal Finish
Another Road Uniform Taken in Shea Stadium. In 1974 the Yankees played in Shea Stadium while Yankee Stadium was being renovated. Upon making my first appearance in New York after being traded, the New York fans gave me a standing ovation when I entered the game. I was not aware of this until George Brett, our third baseman, came over and told me what was happening.

A Royal Finish
The Royals gave me a “surprise” day at the park. I think that the Royals were better at praising me than in actually playing me. After announcing my retirement, I was pitched in 4 or 5 games without giving up any runs. This was more frequent than I had been pitched all year. Some of the players, like Hal McRae, thought I was crazy to retire.
The following pictures were taken at the Surprise Ceremony at home plate surrounded by my family.

Kathi was the only one who cried, not that anyone should, but she knew that her days of coming to the park early with me and enjoying the atmosphere of baseball were over. There is something special between dads and daughters.
